You didn’t come this far to stop
My name is Gina.
I am a mother, a wife, and now, apparently, an author. That last part surprised me more than anyone.
I did not set out to write a book. I set out to find help for my son. I set out to get through the next appointment, survive the next crisis, fill in the next form, make the next phone call. I set out to keep my family together while everything around us was pulling it apart.
And somewhere in the middle of twelve of the hardest years of my life, I realised that the book I needed, the one that told the truth about what this actually looks like from the inside, did not exist.
So I wrote it.
Unconditional is not a book about having the answers. It is a book about what happens when you keep going without them. About a boy who never fitted in, who was labelled and medicated and misunderstood for twelve years, and the family who never stopped fighting for him. About what that fight costs. About what it takes from you. And about the unexpected grace that shows up in the most unlikely places when you are running on empty.
My son is in a programme now. Nine months. It took ten months of fighting to get him there. This is the story of those twelve years, and everything that led to that door finally opening.
I live in the Garden Route, South Africa, with my husband, my younger son, and more animals than is probably sensible.
I am still fighting. I always will be.
Love outside the systems.
